Two drawings done on semi-transparent gray paper, a third done on a telephone bill. Stumped traces (Fr. estomper) in pale color, a wavy horizon line, the indication of a date: a place, signified by fleeting marks, specified as a single moment – one could thus speak of the photographic quality of these drawings (what essentially constitutes photography is not its technique of reproduction but its interruption of the passage of time). The drawings stand in opposition to the temporal form of the panels (Malerei) that Adrian Schiess has been producing for thirty years – panels of color lying on the ground and in which the surroundings are reflected subject to the course and duration of real time. The works on display in the exhibition 13th 14th 15th January are determined by deviation, contradiction, and interruption: their very dissimilarity from one another distinguishes them from the aesthetic continuity that characterizes a group of works such as the panels. Cocquelicot (Wild Poppy) – a dark piece of tree bark in the middle of a red-painted field of color; a solid chunk of wood saturated in red paint and mounted on the wall; a picture surface covered in residues of paint and punctured by a red stain. And a surface covered by a dense heap of strewn needles and pine cones from the forest, sealed in dark-colored paint. The pictures in this exhibition are a focusing and fixating, a condensing and distending – the isolating of instants in the passage of time that momentarily emerges alongside the translucent painting of horizontal panels. These works are evidence of the challenging disunity, the conceptual indecision, of the oeuvre as a whole: the oeuvre stands for duration and momentariness, transparency and opacity – neither for the one, nor for the other.
