Perlen is the 16th project of the growing exhibition series ART FLOW – Art in the Limmat Valley. Sonia Leimer has created a three-part sculpture group that evokes the once-dominant paper industry and the historical use of hydropower.
The sculptures are largely composed of deinking sludge and fibre pulp – materials that emerge from production at the last operational newsprint factory in Switzerland. Leimer has transformed these industrial remnants into striking forms that simultaneously recall the childlike act of playing with paper scraps and provoke layered questions about how we handle resources and media. In their coiled, circling form, the sculptures speak of flow, movement, and change – intertwining the history of papermaking with the current of water.
