The cycle of construction and destruction, of usefulness and decay, has always been intrinsic to building culture. Twelve Austrian and international artists engage – both conceptually and formally – with materials such as concrete, stone, wood, metal, and glass: materials that shape and structure our built environment. Through their artistic and research-based practices, they draw attention to those essential components of our surroundings that often go largely unnoticed due to their seeming self-evidence. Within the exhibition spaces, however, it is not only the material foundations of architecture that come into focus, but also the social and ecological dimensions embedded within them.
