KONSTANZE STOIBER夜の河 / Yoru no Kawa (Night River, Undercurrent, River of night)
Exhibition
Bridge Studios, Sakyo Ward
Kyoto
Japan
27 Dec – 28 Dec 2024
Yoru no Kawa (Night River, Undercurrent, River of night) is the first solo-exhibition of Konstanze Stoiber in Kyoto, Japan. The home, converted to a gallery and residence for artists, was originally conceived as a paediatric hospital.
Mindful of the history of children, the centrepiece of the exhibition is a primary school uniform worn during the Taishō-era in Kyoto. The two remaining brass buttons, minted with Sakura blossoms, weigh heavy on the faded, tattered jacket with miniaturised pockets. Miniaturization as a means of allegory in scale, in Japan, is deeply embedded in Karesansui (dry landscape garden) and references possibilities of arrangement and its evocations. Within the aged jacket, carefully mended holes nod to an understanding of beauty similar to the weathered wall of Ryoan-ji temple.
The title of the exhibition, Yoru no Kawa (Night River, Undercurrent, River of night) references the namesake movie and its translated titles directed by Kōzaburō Yoshimura in 1956. This film displays subtleties in feeling towards the arrival of a new year in Kyoto. Stoibers fascination lies in the relation of this city to its rivers and mountains, acting as a natural fort. Dark streams unintelligible in the darkness of winter nights at the foot of Daimonji-yama.
