The Museum der Moderne Salzburg cordially invites you to the Generali Foundation Study Center at the Rupertinum for the opening of the exhibition Ernst Caramelle. Denkfiguren.

Ernst Caramelle is one of the leading representatives of Austrian Conceptual Art. The exhibition explores his long-standing engagement with the artist's book as an artistic medium, placing it in dialogue with his early photographic series Video Landscapes (1974). At its core are questions of perception, image production, and the relationship between idea, medium, and reality.

Born in 1952 in Hall in Tirol, Austria, Ernst Caramelle lives and works in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and New York, USA. He is one of the defining voices of Austrian Conceptual Art. Across his multifaceted practice, the focus is not the object itself but the idea, which takes form in a variety of media, including drawing, wall works, video, and the artist's book. Since 1973, Caramelle has employed the artist's book as an autonomous artistic medium—a space for reflecting on originality and reproduction, image and text, concept and execution.

This study exhibition focuses on Caramelle's sustained engagement with the book as a medium, juxtaposing it with his early photographic series Video Landscapes (1974). In this series, video images are integrated into physical space in such a way that they merge with their surroundings, unsettling the boundary between mediated construction and physical reality. Together, the two bodies of work address fundamental questions of perception, image production, and media representation, situated within the dynamic relationship between idea, medium, and reality.

An accompanying reading and media lounge invites visitors to explore these themes in greater depth. It offers a curated selection of publications related to all exhibitions on view, drawn from the libraries of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg and the Generali Foundation, as well as access to the media library, which comprises around 500 films and videos.
