MARe opens the first Eastern European retrospective for Bernard Frize and a unique Brâncuși photography exhibition in conversation with three contemporary artists. On May 22, 2026, MARe/Museum of Recent Art opens its doors to the public for two major exhibitions that bring together the works of French painter Bernard Frize and the photography of Constantin Brâncuși. This summer season explores the intersection of modern and contemporary art through two radical approaches. While Frize uses strict rules to generate unpredictable visual results on canvas, Brâncuși used the camera as a vital extension of his sculpture to control light and space. Together, the exhibitions offer a look at how systems and vision transform the way we see objects and art.
Occupying the first and second floors, the Bernard Frize retrospective is an unprecedented event for Eastern Europe. Following major shows in cities like Tokyo, Shanghai, Los Angeles, and Paris, Frize arrives in Bucharest with over 40 large-scale works created between 1980 and 2024. His art is less about the subjective vision and signature of the artist and more about the logic of the process itself. By following simple gestures and rigid rules, Frize creates a visual universe where control and abandonment meet, challenging traditional ideas about how a painting should be made.
